Day-by-Day Itinerary
Arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport and Transfer to Moshi
Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by a representative from Africa Safari Peak and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. At the hotel, you will meet your mountain guide for a detailed briefing about the 8 Days Lemosho Route, gear check, and final preparation for your climb. This day is dedicated to rest, recovery from travel, and mental preparation for the adventure ahead.
LEMOSHO GATE (2,100M) TO MTI MKUBWA CAMP (2,780M)
Distance: 6 km
Walking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Montane Rainforest
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins in the morning after breakfast at your hotel, where your private Africa Safari Peak guide will pick you up and transfer you to Lemosho Gate (2,100m). Once registration formalities are completed and you meet your dedicated private mountain crew, you will receive a comprehensive safety briefing before stepping into the lush rainforest zone.
Your trek covers 6 km at a relaxed, acclimatization-focused pace (pole pole) lasting approximately 3–4 hours. As you hike through dense, canopy-covered forests, keep an eye out for black-and-white colobus monkeys and exotic birdlife. By mid-afternoon, you will arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,780m), where your crew will have your camp ready for a hot, freshly prepared dinner and your first night under the mountain sky.
MTI MKUBWA CAMP (2,780M) TO SHIRA 1 CAMP (3,500M)
Distance: 7 km
Walking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Heath and Moorland
After breakfast, you leave the rainforest behind and continue ascending toward the Shira Plateau. The landscape changes noticeably as the tall forest gradually gives way to heath and moorland, with shorter vegetation and wider views opening around you.
Today's 7 km hike takes approximately 4–5 hours at a steady, comfortable pace. The trail becomes more exposed as you gain elevation, and the air begins to feel cooler and thinner.
Along the way, you will encounter giant heathers, grasses, wildflowers and scattered volcanic vegetation adapted to Kilimanjaro's high-altitude environment. As the forest disappears behind you, views across the surrounding landscape become increasingly impressive.
You will reach Shira 1 Camp (3,500m) in the afternoon, giving you time to rest, enjoy a warm meal and take in the dramatic scenery of the Shira Plateau.
SHIRA 1 CAMP (3,500M) TO SHIRA 2 CAMP (3,850M)
Distance: 7 km
Walking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: High-altitude Moorland / Shira Plateau
Today is a shorter and relatively gentle trekking day, allowing you to continue gaining altitude without rushing. You cross the open Shira Plateau, one of the most scenic sections of the Lemosho Route.
The 7 km walk takes approximately 3–4 hours, with generally gentle terrain and gradual elevation gain. The open landscape provides excellent opportunities to appreciate the scale of Kilimanjaro, while on clear days you may also see distant views toward Mount Meru.
The habitat here is predominantly high-altitude moorland, characterized by low-growing vegetation, giant heathers, grasses and hardy plants that can survive the colder conditions.
The relaxed nature of the day gives you valuable time to acclimatize while enjoying the dramatic volcanic scenery. You arrive at Shira 2 Camp (3,850m) with enough time to rest, explore the surroundings and enjoy dinner before another important acclimatization day.
SHIRA 2 CAMP (3,850M) TO BARRANCO CAMP (3,960M) VIA LAVA TOWER (4,600M)
Distance: 10 km
Walking Time: 6–8 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert to High Moorland
Today is one of the most important acclimatization days of the trek. Rather than taking the most direct route to Barranco, you climb significantly higher to Lava Tower (4,600m) before descending to sleep at Barranco Camp (3,960m).
The total distance is approximately 10 km, taking around 6–7 hours depending on pace and trail conditions. This gradual ascent and descent follows the important acclimatization principle of “climb high, sleep low.”
The habitat changes as you move through high-altitude desert and volcanic terrain, where vegetation becomes increasingly sparse. Lava formations, rocky slopes and wide-open views dominate the landscape around Lava Tower.
After spending time at the higher elevation, you descend toward Barranco through a dramatic landscape of volcanic cliffs and valleys. As you lose altitude, the surroundings become slightly greener, with distinctive giant senecio and lobelia plants appearing around the Barranco Valley.
By late afternoon, you arrive at Barranco Camp (3,960m), spectacularly positioned beneath the imposing Barranco Wall.
BARRANCO CAMP (3,960M) TO KARANGA CAMP (4,035M)
Distance: 6 km
Walking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Your day begins with one of the most memorable sections of the Lemosho Route: the ascent of the Barranco Wall. Although it looks intimidating from camp, the climb is non-technical and involves walking and careful scrambling rather than technical rock climbing.
The day's 6 km trek takes approximately 4–5 hours. Your guide will set a comfortable pace and help you navigate the steeper sections safely. Once above the Barranco Wall, the trail continues across ridges and valleys toward Karanga.
The surrounding habitat is predominantly alpine desert, with sparse vegetation, exposed volcanic rock and hardy plants adapted to the harsh high-altitude conditions. The dramatic combination of cliffs, valleys and views toward Kibo creates some of the most impressive scenery on the route.
After reaching Karanga Camp (4,035m), you can relax and recover while enjoying views of the mountain landscape before the final ascent toward Barafu.
KARANGA CAMP (4,035M) TO BARAFU CAMP (4,680M)
Distance: 4 km
Walking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert / Summit Zone
After breakfast, you begin the steady climb toward Barafu Camp, the final base camp before your summit attempt. Today's route is relatively short but becomes more demanding because of the increasing altitude.
The 4 km hike takes approximately 3–4 hours, allowing you to reach Barafu with plenty of time to rest before summit night. The trail passes through increasingly barren and rocky terrain, with very little vegetation surviving at this elevation.
You are now firmly within Kilimanjaro's alpine desert and summit zone, where temperatures can drop sharply and strong winds may occur. The landscape becomes rugged, exposed and almost completely devoid of trees.
At Barafu Camp (4,680m), your crew will prepare your evening meal while you rest and prepare your summit equipment. You will receive a briefing from your guide about the summit attempt, which normally begins around midnight.
BARAFU CAMP (4,680M) TO UHURU PEAK (5,895M) TO MWEKA CAMP (3,100M)
Distance: Approximately 15–17 km
Walking Time: 12–15 hours including summit and descent
Habitat: Arctic/Summit Zone → Alpine Desert → Moorland
This is your summit day and the most demanding day of the entire climb. Your summit attempt begins around midnight, when temperatures are at their coldest and the mountain is usually quiet beneath the stars.
You begin the slow ascent toward Stella Point (5,739m), following a steep trail of volcanic scree. The climb to Stella Point generally takes around 5–6 hours, depending on pace, weather and individual fitness.
From Stella Point, you continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. The final section can take another 1–2 hours. Standing at the summit, you will have reached the roof of Africa, with breathtaking views across the surrounding landscape when weather conditions are clear.
After celebrating and taking photographs, you begin your descent. You return toward Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp (3,100m).
The habitat changes dramatically throughout the day, from the arctic-like summit zone, through alpine desert, and eventually back toward moorland as you descend. The long descent can be physically demanding, so your guide will maintain a controlled pace.
MWEKA CAMP (3,100M) TO MWEKA GATE (1,640M)
Distance: 10 km
Walking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Montane Rainforest
After breakfast, you begin the final descent through the mountain's lush montane rainforest. The 10 km trail takes approximately 3–4 hours, although the time can vary depending on trail conditions and your pace after the long summit day.
As you descend, the air becomes warmer and more humid, while vegetation becomes increasingly dense. Tall trees, ferns, mosses and colorful forest plants gradually replace the sparse vegetation of the upper mountain.
The return to the rainforest marks a dramatic change from the barren summit landscape you experienced the previous day. The trail continues downhill until you reach Mweka Gate (1,640m).
At the gate, you will complete the final registration formalities and receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate, officially marking the completion of your climb. Your private Africa Safari Peak team will then assist with your transfer back to your hotel in Moshi, where you can enjoy a well-earned shower, a comfortable bed and time to celebrate your achievement.
MOSHI TO KILIMANJARO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Transfer: Private vehicle
Transfer Time: Approximately 45–60 minutes
After breakfast at your hotel in Moshi, enjoy a relaxed morning to recover from your Kilimanjaro climb and reflect on the achievement of reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Depending on your flight schedule, you may have some free time to rest, enjoy the hotel facilities, or take a short walk around Moshi before your departure.
At the agreed time, your private Africa Safari Peak driver will pick you up from the hotel and transfer you to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your onward flight. The journey from Moshi to the airport takes approximately 45–60 minutes, depending on traffic and road conditions.
Your Africa Safari Peak team will assist with your departure arrangements and ensure you reach the airport comfortably and on time, bringing your 8-day Lemosho Route adventure to a smooth and memorable conclusion.
